Welcome to Bia ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we collect, use, and protect your information.
This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data when you use the Bia mobile application (the "App") and related services (collectively, the "Services").
By using Bia, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
Information We Collect
1. Information You Provide Directly
Account Information:
- Name (provided at sign-in via Clerk)
- Email address (provided at sign-in via Clerk)
- Username (you create this during onboarding)
- Optional profile information (bio, profile photo, coach status)
Athlete Profile Claims:
- If you claim an OpenPowerlifting athlete profile, we store the association between your account and that athlete ID
- This links your Bia account to publicly available competition results
Coach-Athlete Relationships:
- Coach connections you create
- Notes about coaching relationships
- Start dates of coaching relationships
Social Connections:
- Users you follow
- Users who follow you

Device Information:
- Device type and model
- Operating system version
- App version
- Unique device identifiers
Usage Information:
- Features you use
- Search queries
- Pages viewed
- Time spent in the app
Performance Data:
- Crash reports
- Error logs
- App performance metrics
3. Information We Do NOT Collect
We do NOT collect:
- Precise geolocation (GPS coordinates)
- Health or medical information
- Financial information (the app is free)
- Biometric data
- Contacts from your device
- Photos from your device (unless you explicitly upload one)

Data Storage and Security
Where We Store Data:
- Your sign-in and account profile (name, email, profile photo) are managed by Clerk
- Your app data (athlete claims, coach relationships, social connections) is stored in a PostgreSQL database on Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- All data is stored in the United States
How We Protect Data:
- Industry-standard encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
- Encryption at rest for sensitive data
- Regular security audits
- Access controls and authentication
- Secure backend infrastructure
Local Storage:
- Some data is cached on your device for performance
- Cached data includes athlete profiles and search results
- Cache can be cleared by uninstalling the app
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We Do NOT Sell Your Data
We will never sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.
Public Information
The following information is publicly visible to other Bia users:
- Your username
- Your bio (if you add one)
- Your claimed athlete profile (if you claim one)
- Your competition results (from OpenPowerlifting)
- Your coach status (if applicable)
- Your following/follower counts
Third-Party Services We Use
Clerk (Authentication):
- Handles secure sign-in and stores your account profile (name, email, and profile photo)
- Subject to Clerk's Privacy Policy
Amazon Web Services (Hosting & Database):
- Hosts our application and stores your app data (PostgreSQL on Amazon RDS)
- Located in the United States
- Subject to AWS's Privacy Policy
Sentry (Error Monitoring):
- Collects crash reports and error logs so we can diagnose and fix problems
- Subject to Sentry's Privacy Policy
OpenPowerlifting (Competition Data):
- Publicly available powerlifting database
- We display this data but do not own it
- Subject to OpenPowerlifting's policies
Airtable (Website Waitlist):
- Stores the email address you submit through the waitlist form on our website
- Subject to Airtable's Privacy Policy
Cloudflare (Website Hosting):
- Hosts buildingbia.com and provides privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics
- Subject to Cloudflare's Privacy Policy
When We Must Disclose Information
We may disclose your information if:
- Required by law or legal process
- Necessary to protect our rights or property
- Necessary to protect user safety
- In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (with notice)
Your Rights and Choices
Access Your Data
You can view and edit your profile information in the app at any time.
Delete Your Data
You can request deletion of your account by:
- Going to Settings > Delete Account in the app, or
- Emailing us at support@buildingbia.com
What happens when you delete your account:
- Your account and profile information are permanently deleted
- Your social connections (following/followers) are removed
- Cached data on your device is cleared
- This action cannot be undone
What is NOT deleted:
- OpenPowerlifting competition data (publicly available)
- Aggregated, anonymized usage statistics
Export Your Data
You can request a copy of your data by emailing support@buildingbia.com. We will provide:
- Your profile information
- Your social connections
- Your coach relationships
- Format: JSON or CSV
Opt Out of Communications
- You can disable push notifications in your device settings
- You cannot opt out of critical account security notifications
California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect
- Request deletion of your information
- Opt out of the sale of your information (we don't sell data)
- Non-discrimination for exercising your rights

European Privacy Rights (GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area, you have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Rectify inaccurate data
- Request erasure of your data
- Restrict processing of your data

Children's Privacy
Bia is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately at support@buildingbia.com and we will delete it.
Data Retention
Active Accounts:
- We retain your data for as long as your account is active
- Cached data on your device expires automatically (typically 24 hours)
Deleted Accounts:
- Account data is permanently deleted within 30 days of deletion request
- Backup systems may retain data for up to 90 days for disaster recovery
Competition Data:
- OpenPowerlifting data is retained indefinitely (it's publicly available historical records)
International Data Transfers
If you access Bia from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States. By using our Services, you consent to this transfer.
We implement appropriate safeguards for international data transfers in compliance with applicable laws.
Cookies and Tracking Technologies
Mobile App:
The app does not use cookies. We collect usage data through:
- Standard app analytics
- Crash reporting
- Performance monitoring
Website:
Our website (buildingbia.com) uses essential cookies for core functionality, plus Cloudflare Web Analytics — privacy-friendly, cookieless measurement. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party ad tracking.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.
For material changes, we will:
- Notify you via email (if you provided one)
- Display a prominent notice in the app
- Require your consent for continued use (if legally required)
Your continued use of Bia after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
